hi, sitting here since 2am in hysterical pain with major flare up in groin area which is a new place for it to go. had ra for 9 yrs now on lot of diff meds but had flare up in left shoulder now for last 2 days and now this. I am absolutely frantic in pain cant lay down took half hr to get down the stairs like zombie dragging leg behind me ....out of hrs GP rang me back after i put in a call asking if they can come out and inject steroid for me into joint as that helps to heal it - they dont stock the steroid in out of hrs :-( He is sending a driver to see me now with prescription for oral morphine as thinks i should take that while waiting for my surgery to open at 8am and ask them to call out which i doubt they will do as you have to be dead for a house visit in this area! anyone else taken this oral morphine and if so does it help ? I find a lot of pain meds make me vomit I hope this doesnt x

I use oramorphine for breakthrough pain relief to good effect. You need to be able to measure the dose accurately so get the pharmacist to provide you a couple of 5 ml syringes. It can make you a little nauseous so an anti-emetic such as metoclorpromide (sp?) may be needed. Oramorp can be repeated after 2 hours but if your pain is constant you may need something more long acting. Morphine comes in a slow release tablet form called MST Continuus. I use that wit the liquid as a last resort. Paul Barrett

Paul"s advice is spot on. I also use Butrans patches. Morphine can make you sick but, as Paul says, a good stomach protector should help. Omeprezole is often prescribed with morphine based drugs.
